BREEDING OBJECTIVES

Breeding Objectives

The Old Ashrose Merino and Poll Merino stud aims to breed large-frame, plainer-body sheep with sound confirmation and constitution. Weaning and yearling weights are used to focus on early maturity.

The five year average fibre diameter is 20.7 microns. The aim is to continue to produce a 20 to 21 micron clip, while increasing fleece weights. Strong selection is placed on wool quality, staple length, strength and yield.

All Old Ashrose merino and poll merino sheep are classed subjectively to assess for confirmation, constitution and type. Objective measurement tools are then used to make final selections.

Market trends for wool and meat quality are continually reviewed to ensure Old Ashrose sheep remain relevant to current and future requirements.
